Knee walls are a popular, simple and relatively inexpensive upgrade that offer advantages worth considering for a new garage building. A one-foot or two-foot high knee wall means that standard seven-foot tall garage doors may be replaced with eight-foot or taller garage doors to accomodate trucks, motor homes and other tall vehicles. If the garage is to be used as a workshop, taller walls also provide more room for taller, larger windows and even storage lofts. In a typical 24' x 24' garage, two feet of additional wall height equates to 1,152 cubic feet of space that could be utilized through a combination of storage lofts or wall cabinets. Knee walls are required to place overhead doors on the side walls (instead of the gable walls) of garage models with seven-foot side walls.
Garages can be installed on elevated knee walls starting at an additional charge of $2.50 per square foot. That works out to a starting price of around $1,000 for a 20' x 20' garage or less than $1,500 for a 24' x 24' garage. Please contact us directly to discuss your specific requirements.
